STUDENTS from Bromley College were recently given the chance to uncover the secrets behind everyday beauty products.

The science students visited the London College of Fashion, where they were given a tour of its high-tech facilities and attended a workshop on cosmetic science.

The visit coincided with National Science and Engineering Week 2008, which highlights British achievements in sciences, technology and engineering.

It enabled the young scientists to learn more about how cosmetics are made and the training available for a career in the industry.

Tutor Alison Cops said: "The trip showed students how exciting the use and application of chemistry can be and we were fascinated to learn how everyday products are created, stored and preserved using highly complex manufacturing techniques."

The day allowed students to think about what they would like to do after completing their national diplomas and the higher education options available to them.

They even watched undergraduates test treatments, before being given the chance to make beauty products of their own.

Science student Sahr Komba Yambasu, who wants to pursue a career in pharmacy, said: "It was fun trying to manufacture a moisturising cream and it was a great opportunity to put what we've been learning at college into practice."

Alison added: "The trip helped to illustrate that having a national diploma in science is a good grounding, which allows students to choose from a variety of interesting and alternative avenues in science at degree level."
