We’ve teamed up with Transport for London (TfL) to offer two lucky readers the chance to win a brand new bike each, a his and hers bike for one male and one female winner, along with accessories.
Figures from TfL show an impressive 91 per cent increase in the amount of cycling in the Capital since 2000, with an estimated 500,000 cycle journeys now being made in the Capital every day.
To support and encourage the rapid growth of cycling, the Mayor of London and TfL are investing a further £55million into cycling improvements and initiatives this year – a ten-fold increase on the amount spent in 2000.
As part of this year’s Summer of Cycling, London will play host to two huge cycling events, the opening stage of the Tour of Britain (September 7) and the popular Sky Sports London Freewheel (September 21 – visit londonfreewheel.com for more information and to register).
In order to ensure that cycling remains safe and enjoyable, cycle training is now offered throughout London.
So whether you’re a beginner or an established rider, or if you just need a confidence boost, contact your local training officer Cameron Stewart on 020 8487 5133 to book a place.
Alternatively, visit tfl.gov.uk/ cycletraining for further information.
So that you don’t lose your way once you’re back in the saddle, TfL also offers a series of free cycle maps, which cover every part of London.
Each map shows recommended local routes for cycling, train and tube stations with cycle parking facilities and other useful information and contacts. To order your free cycle map, visit tfl.gov.uk or call 020 7222 1234.
To get you on the road in style, TfL are giving away an Evans bike, bike lock, lights and a helmet to a reader who can answer the following simple question: Which two cyclists will represent Great Britain in the Madison cycle race in the Olympics in Beijing?
Send your answer on a postcard with your name, address and daytime telephone number to: Summer of Cycling Competition, Hannah Weston, Richmond & Twickenham Times, Second Floor, Alied House, 29-39 London Road, Twickenham, Middlesex TW1 3SZ. Closing date for entries August 22 2008.
Terms: Editor’s decision is final. Prize is non-transferable, no cash alternatives. The competition is not open to employees of the Richmond & Twickenham Times or dependents.
