Surbiton firefighters were called to a kitchen blaze at a university halls of residence.
A crew raced to Kingston University's Clayhill halls, in Burney Avenue, shortly before 10pm last night after burning food triggered a fire alarm.
No one was injured in the blaze, which caught hold after a hob was left unattended.
The flames were brought under control in minutes, firefighters said.
Eight students had escaped the area before the crew arrived.
Kingston firefighters were also called out, to a garage fire at about 6.20am today.
That blaze was put out within five minutes, a crew said.
The cause is under investigation.
