Mosaic for Morris to be unveiled

4:19pm Wednesday 4th October 2006

A huge William Morris mosaic for Tolworth underpass will be unveiled by the Save the World Club on Saturday.

The 40 sq metre mosaic has been created for the Tolworth pedestrian underpass (A3) and has involved more than 1,500 young people, seven arts teachers, four schools, two youth and community centres and co-operation with many agencies and local businesses. The work was all undertaken by volunteer students and outside the normal school time and curriculum.

The design is made in honour of William Morris using original modern interpretational work by young people and using the winning designs of Tom Graham (15) from Southborough High School.

The charity appealed for £2,700 to help finish the mosaic in March and the local Tesco came to the rescue with the lion's share of the funding with some help by Kingston Rotary Club and some local residents.

Bernadette Vallely, SWC development officer said: "It's great that a company like Tesco can help a small charity like us to create something really worthwhile and valuable for so many local people. Thanks Tesco - every little really does help!"

This is the seventh large mosaic project by the award-winning charity Save The World Club who have worked successfully with more than 6,000 local residents, mostly young people, since 2000. In 2005 the charity won the Queens Award for Voluntary Service for their innovative and creative expression of community involvement and citizenship.

The opening celebration will be 1pm to 3pm on Saturday at the A3 underpass in Toloworth with music by Orchid Star, and fantastic walkabout and refreshments.
