Elmbridge runners were out in force at yesterday’s London Marathon, with one even running it for the tenth time.
Nearly 40,000 runners took part in the 36th annual race at 10am on Sunday, April 24 after Major Tim Peake kicked off the marathon with a good luck message from the International Space Station.
Kathryn Scott ran in memory of her father, Stanley
Personal trainer Kathryn Scott, 41, from Weybridge, ran her tenth London marathon in support of the Princess Alice hospice who cared for her father Stanley Hanscombe before he died last year.
She said: “My father passed away just before Christmas. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and he stayed in the hospice in Esher for a few weeks. I wanted to raise money for another family to have that same care.
“I had some tired times but thought of my dad and thought how much pain he would’ve been in and what I was going through was nothing like that."
Mrs Scott, who has two young daughters, raised £2,500 for the charity, achieving a time of 3 hours and 37 minutes.
She said: “I was quite surprised, I thought I was going to get 3.45, it’s a bit of a shock.
“I’m a runner all year round anyway, it’s like my sport, I love doing it, it’s quite regimental.
“I had an army of people behind me. My husband Duncan comes every year and supports me. When you see people it really helps you.”
David Clarke completed the course in 4 hours and 16 minutes
David Clarke, 38, from Hersham, ran the marathon for the first time, achieving a time of 4 hours and 16 minutes for Volunteers Services Overseas.
Mr Clarke, a stay at home dad, said: “They’re fighting poverty around the world and set up schools.
“My daughter is just coming to school age and it makes you think how lucky you are, we need to have them.
“It all went really well, surprisingly well, it was an amazing day.
“I was fully expecting to struggle at one point but the crowd really pushed you on.”

Father and son duo Philip, 65, and Mitchell Ray, 31, from Molesey, also ran “the entire course together chatting” and finished after 4 hours and 16 minutes, according to Mitchell’s wife Sarah.
Running for blind children's charity Victa, Mitchell said: "The reason I ran was because my father was very keen on doing it on his 65th year. I ran it three years ago but not with him so this year we stuck together shoulder to shoulder all way.
“It was great fun, obviously hard work but we were laughing and joking all the way round. The ongoing game was who would get their names shouted out more out of us both, which was me by the way, but it kept our minds off of the pain in the knees and general aches on the way.
“At the end, as me and my father were coming up to the finish line we held hands and raised them in the air which was a great moment.”
Jenn Dutton ran for charity Let Them Help Themselves Out of Poverty
Hersham nanny Jenn Dutton, 23, finished the race in 5 hours and 6 minutes.
She said: “It was so much fun, it was one of the best things I've ever done.
“I'm shattered and aching all over, I can barely go downstairs.
“But it's something I've always fancied, it's a huge challenge and a great thing to do for charity.”
Ms Dutton was running for charity Let Them Help Themselves to provide reusable sanitary towels to girls in Uganda.
“The girls out there don't have access to menstrual hygiene products. They don't go to school on their periods and are anxious they're going to be laughed at, and this is keeping girls in school.”
Alex Chip Patel completed the 26.2 mile course in memory of his grandparents
Alex Chip Patel, 24, from Walton, ran the race in 3 hours and 57 minutes. He said: "I ran for Cancer Research as I lost two grandparents due to cancer and my other nan and step mum have just beaten cancer. Was worth every step. I've raised over £3000 for them so really pleased with it."
Ten people also ran in support of the Woking and Sam Beare Hospices which has a centre in Weybridge.
Daniela Pulido-Lopera, events fundraising executive for the hospices said: “We are immensely proud of them and would like to say congratulations and thank you for all their hard work and commitment!”
