If you have ever dreamed of strapping ice to your feet and setting off down a hill, now is your chance.
Surbiton Ski Sunday is set to make a much anticipated return as wobbly competitors take on St Mark’s Hill.
Sitting firmly in London and fairly far from any snow-covered mountains, the fact there is nothing to ski on is not a hurdle for the event.
Organisers have reverted the science so that instead of skiing on ice or snow, the competitors put the ice directly on to their shoes to create the needed slip.
Now in its seventh year, the event has seen hundreds ski down the hill and attempt to set a world record over the suburban course.
The current world record is held by international competitor Jesper Hedlend from Sweden with a time of 9.97 seconds.
Robin Hutchinson, initiator of the sport, said: “We hope as many people as possible will join in this year and help raise money for Shooting Star Chase.
“Surbiton Ski Sunday democratises skiing taking it out of the hands of the well to do and wealthy and putting it out on the streets.”
Among those taking on the challenge will be Surrey Comet reporters Ellie Cambridge, Jon Mitchell and Rachel Dickerson.
The skiing will take place between 11am and 1pm on October 18 in St Mark’s Hill.
There is still time to sign up as a team of three.
