An elderly man was pulled from his Surbiton flat and taken to hospital after burning toast in the early hours of this morning.
Firefighters were called to Britannia Road at 2.10am when the 86-year-old man’s neighbour saw smoke.
A Surbiton firefighter said: “He had just burnt his toast but the entire flat had filled with smoke.
“He was in a wheelchair and was quite distressed by the accident.
“A neighbour pulled him out and called us. He was taken to hospital.”
