To inspire a new generation of suburban farmers, a crowdfund has been launched to set up a community farm in Tolworth.
The Community Brain, an organisation that aims to bring people together through projects and the arts, has taken over the abandoned Tolworth Allotments Society site and hopes to use it to create a sustainable source of locally produced food.
They want to teach people to grow food, and engender pride in the community.
Over £5,000 has been raised so far, and the project has a target of £18,441, with the funding window closing on September 13.
The money will go towards repairing the site and fitting new equipment, as well as starting training courses and creating a heritage exhibition.
A trial of Aquaponics, in which the waste produced by fish supplies the nutrients for plants, will also be carried out ‘to prove their potential value’.
