Two of the four squash teams representing Colets Health and Fitness, based in Thames Ditton, Surrey, came back victorious this week from the National Squash Club Championships, with all four teams making it through to their individuals finals matches. The Men’s Team and Mixed Over 45s were crowned National Squash Champions, at the event held at Edgbaston Priory Squash Club, Birmingham on 22/23 April.
The Men's matches were extremely tense with a strong Colets’ team, led by Daryl Selby, defeating Nottingham and Pontefract 4-0 in the Quarter and Semi Finals respectively. Colets opponents in the final were Roehampton, who also had a strong squad led by Tom Richards. The Final was incredibly tight, with Colets Richie Fallows taking on Roehampton’s Charles Sharpes in the deciding match and defeating him 3-0 and making Colets the reigning National Squash Club Champions 2-2 in matches and 9-7 in games count back. The Colets’ Men’s Team now go on to represent England in the European Squash Club Championships in Paderborn, Germany, later in the year.
The Mixed Over 45s were also victorious with Colets beating Wigan 2-1.
Against a top-class Kenilworth Club, Colets' Ladies team lost a tightly-contested final however as runners-up they will also be invited to represent England in the European Squash Club Championships. A great effort from the Colets’ Mixed Over 55's team saw them reach the final however Pontefract proved too strong in the end.
David Peck, head squash coach at the not-for-profit club Colets said: “Everyone who represented Colets at the prestigious National Squash Club Championships should be extremely proud of what was achieved over the weekend. There was some outstanding play on court, against some stiff competition but once again the Colets fighting spirit saw our Men’s Team and Mixed Over 45s come up trumps and bring back the trophy for our fantastic squash club for the fourteenth time. The Ladies and Mixed over 55s also did extremely well to reach the finals in their categories.
“We are looking forward to having further success at the European Squash Club Championships later in the year.”
