The Rose Theatre's Christmas production is one of the highlights of Kingston's theatre calendar.

And this year the Surrey Comet can exclusively reveal that the High Street venue will be adapting Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol.

The story of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and his supernatural ride through Christmases past, present and future needs little introduction, and it is hard to find anyone who has not seen or read some adaptation of the tale.

But after the success of last year's production of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which smashed box-office records, the theatre is confident it can repeat the trick with the Victorian tale.

Review: Young leads steal the show at Rose Theatre's Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Christmas production

Back at the helm is Ciaran McConville, the Rose Theatre's director of learning and particpation, who directed last Christmas' hit show.

Surrey Comet:

McConville directed the Rose's box office smash The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

McConville said: "A Christmas Carol is an extraordinary roller coaster ride of a story.

"It’s filled with joyful dance, song and some incredibly emotional moments.

"I know that everyone who enjoyed The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is going to absolutely love this."

Like last year's show, which saw members of the Rose's Youth Theatre star as the Pevensie will once again be given the chance to tread the boards with professional actors. McConville said: "The Rose is known as a world class theatre, but it’s also the centre for the arts in Kingston.

"Our Christmas show celebrates both these aspects, casting young local talent alongside seasoned professionals in our biggest ever production."

The Rose Theatre is looking for submissions from any budding young actor aged 10 to 19 who wants to join Rose Youth Theatre and perform in this Christmas spectacular.

To arrange an audition email the director on CiaranM@rosetheatrekingston.org.

Auditions will take place from April with the youth theatre cast confirmed by mid-summer.
