South West Trains will finally pull down the disused newspaper kiosk at Surbiton station, marking the end of an era.
The kiosk closed last year after John Grieg, who had run it for six years, moved on to become a platform guard in Surrey.
The rail operator has asked Kingston Council's permission to remove the Platform 1 kiosk, which still displays Surrey Comet branding and, in its prime, sold newspapers of every stripe to commuters.
A sign left on the kiosk - adorned with the scrawled post-script, "BIG SHAME" - blamed free newspapers for its demise.
A consultation on the plans is open until Friday, April 10. Council officers will decide in mid-April whether to allow the kiosk's removal.
