Kingston will celebrate Diwali, the ancient Hindu “festival of lights” for the first time this autumn, with a light switch on.
The borough is hosting a mini food market with live music to accompany the switch on, which will see some of the town centre’s buildings light up to celebrate Diwali, a traditional Indian festival signifying the victory of light over darkness.
Mayor Roy Arora said: “I’m thrilled that, for the first time in the history of the borough, town centres and some of our municipal buildings will be lit up in celebration of Diwali.
“As a multi-cultural, multi-faith community, I feel this is an important step in making all of our residents feel welcome and at home.”
The switch on will take place on Thursday, November 5, at 4.30pm in Kingston’s Market Place.
