A Surbiton team beat competition from across the country to win the national racketball championships.

Andrew Hill decided Surbiton Rackets should enter the tournament one year ago, after watching the club "dominate the Surrey first division for years".

Other teams in the competition bolster their ranks with current and former professionals, so Surbiton recruited top players Adam Murrills and Pete Bilson, as well as first team players Michael Robinson, Edward Tinwell and Michael Hennings.

After marching through the first rounds, the team arrived at The Edgbaston Priory Club in late April for the finals.

They beat former champions Liverpool without dropping a game, and faced Devon and Exeter on the final day.

Edward Tinwell won his match 3-1, Adam Murrills missed out at 3-0, Michael Robinson won his game 3-0, and Pete Bilson needed just two games to secure the title.

Michael Robinson said: "It was a tremendous team effort from all involved, all who played, the club members who supported all the way, the club and a select few individuals who without them Surbiton wouldn’t have won the title in their debut year."

The club is also inviting new members to join, saying they have opportunities for all standards at their base in Berrylands.

Mr Robinson said: "Who knows? You may be calling yourself a national champion one day."
