Drivers were brought to a standstill on the M25 between junctions 8 and 9 near Leatherhead due to a 'car fire' at the weekend.
Live images from traffic cameras at the scene show dark plumes of smokes coming from a vehicle on the motorway on Sunday afternoon.
The images also show all four lanes of anti-clockwise traffic being held.
According to Highways England, Surrey Police officers attended a 'car fire'.
Four fire engines were called at around 4.40pm on Sunday to a report of a car fire between junctions 8 and 9 of the M25.

"In addition @SurreyRoadCops and @HighwaysSEASTassisting with carriageway clean-up. Long delays."
Reports of the incident on this stretch of the M25 first emerged on social at around 5pm.
One Facebook user wrote: "I had broken down just in front of it. Luckily there was a police car driving behind the car and got the family out of the car just before it burst into flames."
One Twitter user wrote: "There is the hard shoulder and exit lane just ahead but they won't let us use it."
Drivers were advised to approach with caution.
