SIR. Congratulations to everyone who took part in the London Freewheel bike ride on Sunday, 23 September, and enjoyed the wonderful sensation of cycling around central London without any cars.
It was an extraordinary day to be in London, and an amazing success, with some estimates putting the number of people celebrating cycling at up to 60,000. I hope that those of you who didn't make it this time will join us next year, when it should be even bigger and better.
Cycling is growing fast in London and we need to invest in more cycle lanes, training and cycle parking in order to keep up with demand.
In return for supporting the London Mayor's budget last year, I negotiated a trebling of the cycling budget in London. This is paying for new initiatives, such as cycle training for all primary school children who want it and cycle parking at all railway stations in London.
Doing more to promote walking and cycling will make London less polluted and Londoners a lot healthier.
