SIR. I have been away and just caught up with the local news.

Regarding Mr Rhodes' letter of September 12 and his idea that in Putney High Street the traffic light should be linked and co-ordinated to respond to traffic volumes, and no bus stop in the centre of the High Street: Why should traffic have priority - most of it through traffic, with no thought or allowance for pedestrians or buses?

There is more than enough priority given to traffic. This is our High Street - foul, traffic clogged and polluted with appalling air quality, the most polluted of all the five town centres in Wandsworth, as measured officially by Wandsworth Council. It is certainly the most unpleasant.

Mr Rhodes lives in Wimbledon and probably uses Putney High Street as a through road. No doubt he is highly frustrated because he cannot just sweep through it without stopping, leaving us with the "benefit" of his pollution.

For the sake of the health and well-being of all users, especially children and those with lung problems, the congestion charge should come to Putney, because something radical needs to be done about the air quality and all the through traffic.

I'd like to thank Mr Callaway of the Putney Society for raising the issue.
