In the face of spiralling energy costs and growing fears about climate change, London needs to do all it can to reduce emissions and cut fuel bills - not just in our homes but on our public transport system, too.
By 2010, the Mayor's electricity bill for running the Tube could rise to four times what is was five years ago. That is why I think it is time to think about switching the entire Underground network to renewable energy.
Until relatively recently, the London Underground always generated their own electricity but switched to the National Grid in 2002.
At the moment there is not enough green energy being generated to supply the whole Tube network, but if Transport for London invested in a major new offshore windfarm they could generate 1200 gwh of electricity and reduce London's transport CO2 emissions by four per cent at a stroke.
If the Mayor wants London to go green, this is definitely one of the big ideas that he has so far been lacking.
