SIR. On behalf of Long Ditton Residents' Association (LDRA) we wish to draw your attention to the recent decision of Kingston Council to restrict the use of the Villiers Road waste disposal centre to "Kingston residents only".
Surrey County Council (SCC) is quotable on the subject of waste disposal centres as stating "SCC believes that more Kingston residents use SCC facilities than vice versa".
So how much discussion did Kingston Council have with their neighbouring authorities, the SCC and Elmbridge Borough Council (EBC), before authorising a change to the current arrangements?
The answer is none whatsoever. The change when first announced came as a complete surprise to both the SCC and the EBC. This lack of will to work, consult and co-operate with neighbours is almost unbelievable.
In the short term, Kingston residents will be pleased. A large number of Elmbridge residents however will be driving nine miles instead of two along already overused roads to dump there surplus rubbish.
Surely this is just the sort of thing that councils right across the country and with any sort of "green" agenda are trying to avoid?
Sir George Vallings, chairman, and Philip Dale, vice-chairman, Long Ditton Residents' Association
