SIR. I agree with most of the points made by Tim Lidbetter about the need to stop buses and lorries hitting the low road bridge near Norbiton station, but surely a chicane will not solve the problem - all this would do is cause the bus or lorry to move laterally and perhaps jam itself under there even more?
Surely what is needed at Norbiton is some sort of gantry on both sides of the bridge, positioned far enough away from the bridge itself and with an array of either bells or lights (or both) that would hit the front of the lorry or the upper deck of a bus, and make the driver aware of the bridge ahead.
The gantry could be made light enough to break on impact, so that it did not damage the vehicle too badly or injure any passing pedestrians or smaller vehicles.
