SIR. We welcome Helen Martin-Rolls' letter published in last week's Borough News, giving the perspective of a true Battersea Girl.
People like her have always known that Clapham Junction station is in Battersea.
The SW11tch Back to Battersea Campaign is focused on informing the larger majority of residents who have not originated from the area and are led to believe that Clapham Junction is in Clapham.
When people can go to the Clapham Grand, buy property via the Clapham office of a Northcote Road estate agent, shop at Asda Clapham and hire a street car from Grant Road in Clapham - all in Battersea - it is no surprise that Battersea's identity fades in the consciousness of residents and businesses in SW11.
The SW11tch Back to Battersea Campaign aims to tip the scales back towards Battersea and encourage all residents in SW11 (in particular the area around Clapham Junction) to understand that they are located in Battersea and be proud to declare it.
We are determined to stand up for Battersea and intend to campaign for a number of changes - for example, a change of name from Clapham Junction Town Centre to Battersea Town Centre (Clapham Junction).
We recognise that despite the historical error in naming Battersea's key railway station after Clapham, the name Clapham Junction is famous and well loved.
We would like the station to be known as Clapham Junction, Battersea, in a similar way that Queenstown Road, Battersea, is called out at Victoria Station and named as such on AtoZ maps.
We very much hope that Helen Martin-Rolls and other Battersea Girls, and guys, will join our campaign to restore pride in the name of Battersea and fight back against the confusion caused by the proliferation of the name and identity of Clapham beyond the realms of Clapham Junction, which we are proud to have at the heart of Battersea.
