The man convicted of fatally stabbing Archie Beston in Kingston has been sentenced to 19 years in jail after a hearing at Kingston Crown Court today (October 29).
Tyron Bryan had previously been found guilty of the manslaughter of 19-year-old Archie after he fatally stabbed him in Kingston in February this year.
Bryan was also sentenced to three years imprisonment for Section 20 GBH on a second victim, and 18 months for possession of an offensive weapon.
The sentences will run concurrently.
Crowds of supporters who had campaigned for a tough sentence for Bryan cheered as Archie's Mum Becky greeted them outside the court.
DCI Helen Rance, who led a team of detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command on the case, said: "Today’s sentencing is the culmination of our investigation into the tragic and needless death of a young man. No sentence can provide comfort for a family; Archie’s mother lost not only her son but her best friend.
"His family have shown such dignity over the past eight months, and the thoughts of my team remain with them."
Archie's mum Becky spoke with the Surrey Comet earlier this week.
"He’s such a good, hard-working boy. It needs to be known how good my son is, he’s such a good kid.
"He would never have gone up to the van if he hadn’t been hit before,” she said, describing how Archie appeared to have been struck by a van in which Bryan had been travelling moments before the stabbing.
Footage of the scenes taken outside the court showed jubilant supporters celebrating the decision.
Campaigners had hoped for a tough sentence to deliver justice for Archie and in the hopes it would contribute towards tackling knife crime in the future.
"The justice system needs to change. They were known for carrying knives... We had no idea about any of this, we’re so far removed from this,” Becky said, remarking on the two men, Byron and Finlay Ahwan, who were directly involved in Archie’s death (Ahwan drove the van that Byron was in during the incident).
Ahwan was found guilty of attempted GBH on Victim 2 (with a vehicle) and dangerous driving.
He was sentenced to seven years in prison.
