I'm glad to see that Councillor Grimston at least reads the letters page of the Wandsworth Borough News, even if he and his party don't support the Green Guardian pages and awards.
I'm also very glad to see that he has now publicly congratulated the Wandsworth Guardian for getting the awards going.
Unlike he and the other Wandsworth Conservatives, Wandsworth Labour Party has no problem with supporting positive initiatives on the environment, whether taken by the local paper or by the local council.
We thought long and hard before deciding not to be petty, and not to vote against the proposal to set up a local Wandsworth scheme, but we have never been in favour of boycotting the Green Guardian scheme, hence supporting it both this year and last. We have no problem in congratulating the winners of all the local green awards.
The much-vaunted "Wandsworth Way" means that unfortunately the council prefers to work in isolation, and cannot bring itself to support others on environmental issues, whether that be the local papers, or the Mayor of London.
Well, I have news for Coun Grimston: to tackle environmental issues properly, we all need to work together.
I call on Coun Grimston and his colleagues to support environmental initiatives other than their own - both the local Green Guardian Awards and the Mayor of London's initiative on introducing a low-emission zone.
We can only tackle climate change if we work together in partnership, not in isolation.
