The M25 and M3 in Surrey are among the most dangerous roads in the UK regarding the prevalence of speeding on the highways, a new report has found.
Both motorways, which pass through the county, were placed in the 'Top 10' of roads with the highest number of speeding fines issued 2019-2020.
The figures, based on Freedom of Information (FOI) requests made to 45 police forces around the country by rental company Wessex Fleet, found that Surrey also placed in the top five of counties recording the total number of speeding fines issued over the time period.
Of concern for Surrey residents was data in the report that showed the M25 in Surrey to be the road with the second highest number of speeding offences of any in the UK caught by police for 2019-2020.
Overall, there were 23,558 speeding offences on the M25 reported over the time period, equating to fines issued by police worth a staggering £2,355,800.
The only road in the UK that reported more was the A282 in Kent (26,920 offences, £2,692,000 of fines).
Surrey also bore the unhappy fact of being the only regional authority other than London to feature more than once on the Top 10 list.
The M3 in Surrey placed 10th on the list, with 13,331 offences reported on the highway for a total of £1,333,100 in fines.
Meanwhile, the total number of speeding offences in Surrey was also among the highest of the entire UK.
In a Top 5 of the total number of speeding offences during 2019-2020, Surrey placed fifth:
- Greater London – 88,481
- Avon and Somerset – 60,000
- Kent - 59,017
- West Mercia – 58,881
- Surrey – 56,843
Meanwhile, other regions in the country were found to have some of the safest roads regarding speeding offences.
The report for example found that:
- More than 80 per cent of the safest roads were in Wales, Dyfed-Powys Police gave out the least speeding fines – only 298 to be exact.
- Other Safest areas included Cleveland (3,237 fines) and Cheshire (7,738)
- Northern roads are nearly 20 times safer than those in the south – With a total of 323,222 speeding offences recorded by Southern forces in the most dangerous list, and only 20,716 in the Northern regions.
