A person has sadly died after they were reportedly hit by a train at Weybridge station this afternoon (Thursday, March 25).

Reports of an emergency services incident surfaced over the course of Thursday afternoon, with train services between Surbiton and Woking disrupted by the response.

It was later confirmed by British Transport Police (BTP) that the person in question had passed away.

Responding to a request from the Surrey Comet, a spokesperson for BTP said:

"British Transport Police were called to Weybridge railway station at 1.18pm today (25 March) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the person and establish the full circumstances behind their death."

Southwestern Railway, who operate trains on the line, put out a statement suggested the person had been struck by a train.

In their online statement, a spokesperson said:

"We have received reports that a person has been struck by a train between Surbiton and Woking.

"Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident. In order to allow emergency services access to the railway all power to the track will need to be switched off in the affected area."

In a later update, the rail operators suggested disruption would last up to at least 8pm on Thursday evening.

Until further notice, the following train alterations will take place:

- Services between Portsmouth and London Waterloo will divert via Cobham & Stoke D'Abernon.

- Services between Salisbury and London Waterloo will run between Salisbury and Basingstoke only.

- Services between Bournemouth / Weymouth and London Waterloo will run between Bournemouth / Weymouth and Basingstoke only.

- Services between Portsmouth and London Waterloo via Basingstoke will run between Portsmouth and Winchester only.

- Services between Weybridge and London Waterloo via Ascot will run between Virginia Water and London Waterloo only.

- Services between London Waterloo and Alton are cancelled.

- Stopping services between Basingstoke and London Waterloo are cancelled.
