Emergency services including a fire crew and police were called to reports of smoke billowing from a property in Epsom's Capitol Square over the weekend (April 17) that is now thought to have been caused by burnt tortilla chips.

Police said they received reports of "large amounts of smoke" coming from a flat in the residential area, and were joined by the fire service there around 8.25pm on Saturday.

Amid the response, road closures were put in place and some evacuations were even ordered as the first responders coordinated a measured response.

Happily, however, the emergency workers reported there was "nothing to worry about" in the end, after finding the source of the fire which was thought to be "burnt tortilla chips".

As a spokesperson for Epsom and Ewell police wrote in a statement posted to Facebook:

"Over the weekend on Saturday 17th April 2021 at around 20:25 hours you may have noticed multiple emergency services that attended Capitol Square in Epsom town centre.

"This was due to reports of a large amount of smoke coming from one of the flats.

"This resulted in the flats at Capitol Square being evacuated and a number of road closures in town put in place. Thankfully there was nothing to worry about.

"The fire service. Completed their checks of the building and it is believed that the alarm and smoke was caused by a resident who burnt their #tortillachips.

"We thank all residents and members of public for their corporation that evening."
