Arson suspected as fire destroys stand at Egham Town FC

Police said the pair, both 14-year-old boys, were detained on suspicion of arson as images released by the authorities showed the devastating aftermath of the blaze.

One of the stands at the club appeared blackened and almost entirely destroyed by the fire that prompted a joint response from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and Surrey Police Tuesday evening.

A statement released by the Runnymede branch of Surrey Police on Facebook Wednesday (May 5) read:

"We have two 14-year-old males in custody on suspicion of arson following a fire at Egham Town Football Club on Tuesday evening (May 4).

"A scene cordon remains in place at the location since yesterday evening whilst the investigation continues.

"We are awaiting SOCO to complete a forensic sweep. If you have information you think can assist us please send us a direct message quoting crime reference 54210045968."

Egham Town FC meanwhile took to Twitter, lamenting the fire and suggesting it was an "attack".

The club also promoted a fundraiser that was set up after the fire by a fan and is currently attracting hundreds of pounds in donations.

"Thanks for all your kind messages following the arson attack on our club last night," a Twitter post from the Egham town FC account read.

"Very humbling. A local resident has kindly set up a go fund me page.

"We wasn't expecting anything but thank you all so much."

SFRS were contacted for comment.
