Budget supermarket Lidl has withdrawn its plans to open another store in Kingston.
The food retailer was set to transform the London Road Wickes – which remains open with no confirmed closing date.
The 1.8 acre branch would include landscaping and a 111-space car park with six blue badge disabled and seven parent and child bays. A total of six electric vehicle charging spaces are also planned.
Developers Lidl, said: “The proposals will contribute towards an improved local retail provision, with increased choice and competition, and will provide new full and part-time job opportunities for the local community.
“The store customer entrance/exit being relocated to a position further away from the vehicular access to Gordon Road, [will reduce] pedestrian/vehicle collision risks at the two busiest areas of the car park.”
Plans were going recommended for approval by the Kingston Council planning bosses on Wednesday evening (July 28), but were withdrawn after a government rule change was published last week.
Lidl will likely resubmit their ammended plans soon.
