A bus and car have burst into flames and been destroyed by fire after a crash involving another car this morning in Ewell.

The A240 Kingston Road is still closed following the crash which happened at 7.05am.

A tweet from Surrey Police's Roads Policing Unit at 8.20am said the road is closed travelling towards Epsom due to a crash which resulted in a fire.

One person with minor injuries was treated at the scene and taken to St Helier Hospital.

The fire is out but drivers are still being urged to find alternative routes due to the damage to the road.

The A240 north from Ruxley Lane to Mavis Avenue will be closed "for a long period of time", according to police.

A video of the scene outside the Queen Adelaide pub shows fire and ambulance crews in attendance.

A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said:“We received a call this morning around 07.05am to a report of an RTC on Kingston Road, Ewell.

“Two fire engines were sent, arriving at the scene around 07.15am. Two cars and a bus had been involved in a collision.

"One of the cars and the bus had also caught fire.

“The incident was cleared and crews left the scene around 08.25am.”

A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "I can confirm that we were called shortly after 7am this morning to reports of an RTC involving a car and a bus on the Ewell bypass, Epsom.

"It was also reported that the car was on fire.

"Ambulance crews attended the scene and one person, with minor injuries, was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to St Helier Hospital."

At 10.20am, Surrey Police tweeted: "UPDATE we are advised that due to the damage to the road the #A240 north, Ruxley lane to Mavis Avenue will be closed for a long period of time.

"Highways will be placing a diversion to follow. Please avoid travelling north on the A240 if you can.

"Follow local traffic for updates."

At 8.20am, officers tweeted: "The A240 Kingston Road is closed outside the Queen Adelaide pub (not involved in any way!) travelling towards Epsom due to an RTC resulting in a fire.

"Minor injuries only.

"The fire is out and recovery is on its way.

"Please find an alternative route."
