An elderly man has suffered from a bleed on the brain after confronting a gang who were allegedly tampering with his car.

On Thursday October 13, 2022, at 8.20pm, a man in his seventies was taking rubbish to his wheelie-bin outside of his home in Elmstead Gardens.

Police believe the victim saw three men who were tampering with his car that was parked in front of his driveway.

The victim confronted the suspects and was attacked, sustaining head injuries including a bleed on the brain.

He is currently receiving treatment in hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The suspects, who are described as three men wearing balaclavas, then ran off in the direction of Inveresk Gardens.

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area and may have witnessed anything or have any dashcam or CCTV footage.

Borough Commander for Epsom and Ewell, Jon Vale said: “We know that this incident will be concerning for local residents, and we are doing all we can to catch those responsible.

“We responded immediately and the investigation into the incident continues at full pace today with officers carrying out detailed enquiries.

“Catalytic converter thieves are often prepared to use violence and intimidation to deter members of the public from challenging them.

“We encourage anyone who thinks they are witnessing a theft in action to stay back in a safe place and call us immediately on 999.”

A spokesperson for Surrey Police said: “Surrey Police is currently investigating the report of a serious assault which occurred in Elmstead Gardens in Epsom yesterday evening (Thursday, 13 October) at around 8:20pm.

“The victim, a man in his 70s, was taking rubbish to his wheelie-bin when he disturbed three men believed to be tampering with his vehicle that was parked parked in front of his driveway.

“He confronted the suspects and was attacked, sustaining head injuries including a bleed on the brain. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
