A small cricket club have made their debut on the big screen, telling the story of their tour of South Africa.
Claygate Cricket Club premiered the film Cricket Whites at the Odeon cinema in Esher High Street on July 13, a documentary of their recent tour to the Eastern Cape in South Africa, which included playing all-black teams from the townships.
The film told how the tour was inspired by club member Dillon Woods, who was born in South Africa and is the son of the late anti-apartheid campaigner Donald Woods.
The team was based in East London, in Eastern Cape Province, which had been the location of Dillon’s family home until 1977 when they had to flee South Africa.
The club’s spokesman Nigel Abbott said: “The tour was an amazing achievement for a small village club and the film really captures the story. As a result of the Odeon’s generosity we were able to invite a number of local people, so they could see what their local club has achieved.”
The team played nine games during the two weeks they were there, including a final day/night match under floodlights against a Border Invitation XI at the international ground at Buffalo Park.
They also raised £5,000 to purchase cricket equipment for the development of the game in the townships.
