A New Zealander has died after falling onto live train tracks at Queenstown Road station, Battersea.

The 26-year-old, named locally as Vaughan Jakeman, was seen on CCTV walking off the platform at around 2.30am on Saturday.

It is believed he was electrocuted before being hit by a train.

Mr Jakeman, who lived in Clapham Junction, moved to London from Auckland last summer and worked in the sales department of drinks company This Water.

He had been out drinking with friends on Friday night and was alone on the platform before he died.

A friend, who knew Mr Jakeman from New Zealand, described him as a “really fun personality who enjoyed the social side of life.”

He said: “He'd been wanting to come to England for so long. He gets over here and now it has killed him. At least he died doing what he wanted to do.

"Last year he went running with the bulls in Pamplona in Spain. It's quite ironic that he came out of that fine but when in London he falls off a train platform. He had been doing more life threatening things."

A spokeswoman from This Water said: “We are shocked and saddened by the loss of a great friend and colleague.

"Vaughan was a bright and ambitious guy with a great sense of fun. He was kind and considerate and always made time for everyone - a real gentleman. He will be sorely missed.”

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police (BTP) said the driver of the train, the 5.10am Waterloo to Haslemere service, had seen a body on the line but had been unable to stop in time.

She added that they were treating the incident as non-suspicious.
