A main road was cordoned off and several houses were evacuated after a suspect vehicle was spotted outside Surbiton police station.
The car was seen in “suspicious circumstances”, parked near the back of the Ewell Road station at 6.25pm last night. A police cordon was put up and traffic was diverted.
Kingston Police could not say why the vehicle was under investigation due to “operational reasons” but decided it was safe two hours later and reopened the road.
London Ambulance and the Fire Brigade were also called to the area as a precaution but did not take any action.
Chief Inspector Law of Kingston police said: "Kingston police would like to thank everyone for their patience who were affected by this disruption by the emergency services until they were satisfied that the area was safe to re-enter."
