- Family firms could face crippling tax bills following a landmark ruling in the High Court, warns Kingston accountants Menzies. It predicts the clampdown will be limited, but says small businesses need to check whether they will be affected. The court took the view that husbands and wives who both draw dividends from family firms will be treated as if all the income was the main earner's. The move prevents the wife making use of her personal allowance and lower rates of income tax.
