When falling off a bike the only way to overcome the fear of cycling again is to get straight back on.
It was that attitude which helped earn 14-year-old Joshua Peck the recognition he deserved in this year's Youth Achievement Awards.
Joshua, who attends St Philip's School in Leatherhead Road, Chessington was one of five youngsters in the borough who picked up trophies for their successes or achievements against the odds.
He was the winner in the Sporting Achievement Category for his determination in learning to ride his bike despite his disability.
He said he felt thrilled and surprised when presented with the prize at a ceremony at Raven's Ait on June 9 which honours the remarkable achievements of young people in the Royal borough.
Joshua, who lives in Victoria Road, Kingston has difficulty walking and started learning to cycle about 10 years ago.
He said: "I am very pleased because I feel all the years of trying to ride my bike have been worthwhile.
"It was a real surprise when I got the award and it was quite scary being in front of all those people.
"I ride my bike about three times a week to parks such as Bushey Park, Hampton Court and Wimbledon Common and enjoy it very much.
"I love feeling the wind in my face and also enjoy swimming to keep fit."
He added: "The evening was a double celebration because my birthday was a few days before."
His mother, Sue said walking was very uncomfortable for Joshua, who also has tunnel vision, and cycling had provided an outlet in terms of getting about.
