Cobham youngsters could soon be enjoying a late-night cappuccino in their own space, thanks to a high street coffee shop.

Costa Coffee is planning to open its doors to people under the age of 18 from 6pm to 9pm every Monday night.

Police and staff believe the alcohol free evening will help tackle antisocial behaviour and provide young people with a funky, safe environment in which to hang out.

Manager Max Knupfer said: "I grew up in South Africa where there was always something to do, but here you just see kids hanging around. I'm really excited because I think it's going to be good for the area."

The plan is to staff the evening with volunteers and Mr Knupfer is in the process of negotiating discounts so no-one will be excluded because they cannot afford it.

The idea was hatched by Cobham Police Community Support Officer Mel Havelock- Brown and Police Constable Mark Phillips after a similar initiative pioneered by Starbucks in Epsom proved to be popular.

PCSO Havelock-Brown said: "All the kids keep telling me is how bored they are and how there is nothing to do. This gives them their own space so I think it's great."

Organisers hope to have the night off the ground by the end of July.
