Another running event hit the streets of Kingston last weekend with a new course record and more than a thousand competitors.

Former Great British athlete Benedict Whitby smashed the record finishing the 16 mile course in 1 hour 20 minutes, breaking the previous time from 2004 by nearly seven minutes.

Nearly 1,500 people trailed him around the course, many opting for the 8 mile loop from the historic marketplace to Hampton Court and back. Geoffrey Jackson, who turns 80 in December completed the 8.2 mile course in 1 hour 28 minutes.

John Lunt, founder of Human Race, which organised the run, said: "Today’s event has shown again the success of hosting a running race in historic Kingston.

"We have had some great competitors and to see the course record broken after six years is fantastic".

Garth Dawson, from race sponsors Profeet, said: "The day was well organised, the run itself is well chosen, picturesque and enjoyable.

"We all enjoyed our day and so did all the other runners we spoke to."

Registration for the next breakfast run on March 27 next year, sponsored by Whole Foods Market, is now open at humanrace.co.uk.

The winner of the Profeet Run Kingston Timex watch and running analysis session was Stephanie Macklin, from Old Kingston Road, Kingston.
