As I approached Hampton Court Palace’s beautifully illuminated ice rink, I felt confident.
This would be my year. The year I would take to the ice, on the rink’s near infamous press night, in an elegant swan-like manner and gracefully pirouette as spectators looked on in awe.
Then came the thud and the three-woman pile-up, with me the clear cause of the crash.
I watched as my colleague was lifted from the ice and could only apologise for my overconfidence.
I should have known I was not ready to attempt a conga on ice.
The speedy assistance was pretty impressive and as people fell on their bums throughout the night, they were quick to help.
Staff were also incredibly quick to catch the action on camera, the photographs of which were made available at the end of the skating session.
The palace provides a grand backdrop and those skating in the evening are in store for a real treat, as it stands magnificently lit up against the night sky.
With a brass band playing festive numbers and a carousel on site for afters, it really is a great event for family, friends and couples alike.
The mulled wine, seasonal snacks and addictive hot chocolate at the rink-side cafe are a great excuse for non-skaters to stand and watch injury-free as well.
Get your skates on until January 8 at Ice at the Palace. Call 08448 718815 or 08442 485044 to book or get opening hours.
