I note one of the local Lib Dem Councillors has recently written you a letter (Tories are only active at election time, May 2) repeating a line they trot out every so often, that the Conservatives are "only active at election time".

She knows perfectly well that local Conservatives, be it our MP Chris Grayling (who Labour ridiculously attacked in your paper a couple of weeks ago as having done nothing for Epsom & Ewell),  councillors and activists have been active in many local issues in Epsom & Ewell borough, Ashtead, Tattenhams, Nork (i.e. the constituency) and Surrey County Council over recent years. It seems therefore that this resort to personal attacks is a clear sign of desperation from a party with nothing to show or offer.

Readers can test this by asking themselves three simple questions regarding the main issues which have faced Epsom and Ewell in recent years.

Who has been active on saving Epsom Hospital for many years now, most recently with the BSBV proposals last year? Who has been working for years on getting Oyster/smart cards and Zone 6 for Epsom train station? Who has been trying to save Epsom from planning blight, both in the Save Epsom campaign and the recent campaign to save the green belt? I believe residents will have seen our MP Chris Grayling, Conservative councillors and activists on the front line every time.

Many local residents get involved, but you don’t see many Lib Dems- although they often want to take credit come election time. Maybe they’re too busy attending all their committee meetings to actually take real action and do real work to get real results for local residents.

Finally it is pretty rich to throw around accusations of not being active when in the local elections currently underway in the constituency (five wards- three in Ashtead, Tattenhams and Nork) the Lib Dems have only even bothered to put up a candidate in one. Even Labour managed two out of five. Local Conservatives are contesting all five wards. So the Lib Dems don’t even bother to turn up at election time.
