One of the things that makes living in Epsom so great is easy access to the Downs - and one of the best ways of accessing the Downs is by Chalk Lane.  It is, for most of the day, a haven for horse-riders, walkers, runners and cyclists.  At both ends of Chalk Lane there are clear signs that the road is to be used by motor vehicles "for access only".  There are also gates at each end to slow the traffic and protect vulnerable users.

Unfortunately, during most rush hour mornings, an increasing number of rat-running, inconsiderate motorists persist in using Chalk Lane and fail to close the gates, despite the clear signs, in order to save a few seconds of their time.  Their selfishness poses a risk to the horse-riders, walkers, runners and cyclists and ruins a community asset.  It does not help that the top gate has been broken in a collision, the bottom gate damaged and a number of motorists persist in removing the ropes that keep the gates shut.

Perhaps Epsom and Surrey County Council could be persuaded to have a campaign on a few weekdays mornings to catch these motorists before it loses its value to Epsom as a green and quiet link to the Downs?  It would be even better if that campaign could persuade the councils to consider how the gates could be improved so that they cannot be left open.
