Your article (Gary Glitter protected by 'tobacco guards' inside High Down Prison, April 27) doesn't shock me at all. HMP High Down is the worst run establishment I have ever been to and unfortunately I have visited my partner in a few.
I have written to the governor many times and he doesn't have the decency to respond. Many of the men are locked in their cells for 23 hours a day which isn't allowed as they have to have an average of 'purposeful activities' - this isn't being met.
The food isn't enough for grown men. My partner has lost a considerable amount of weight due the child-size portions they receive.
I don't expect him to have the best food but enough food should come as standard.
The visiting system leaves families, women, children, elderly, disabled everyone out in the cold. No shelter from rain or wind and not even a bench provided or toilets for that matter!
We stand there in line.....for hours. We are treated as if we are the criminals! Myself and the families I speak to are all full-time, hard-working people.
