The residents of West Hill and Stamford Green should welcome the construction of the cycle path that they criticised recently in the Epsom Guardian ('Hazardous' cycle path sparks fear, June 4). A little extra care when reversing out of their driveways is a small price to pay for the advantage of having safe access either on foot or on a bicycle to local schools and Epsom station and the extensive network of shared-use paths on Ashtead and Epsom Commons and Horton Country Park. If it encourages a few more people to cycle, it could improve their health, reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and parking problems and make life better for everyone.
Cyclists are getting used to Please Dismount signs. It is not a reason for not providing any infrastructure for cyclists. In case any of the residents think that that the path will be taken over by a speeding Lycra-clad cyclists, they needn't worry; most of those prefer to cycle on the road.
If the residents still have concerns, they should have a look at a similar path that has been recently opened between Ashtead and Leatherhead on the A24.
Hopefully, the council will soon find some money to construct similar facilities along East Street.
