Shocked residents in an affluent part of Ashtead spoke today of their shock after a woman was found stabbed to death in a house in their street yesterday.

The woman, in her 30s, was found by Surrey Police officers at 51 Woodfield Lane at about 2pm. A 33-year-old man, who was also found with injuries, was arrested and taken to hospital and is in a stable condition.

Neighbours described in detail the moment that six or seven police vehicles and an air ambulance helicopter descended on the street, which is currently covered in six inches of snow.

One resident, who did not want to be named, described the scenes in the normally tranquil neighbourhood as “completely out of the ordinary”.

She said: “There were so many police, the street was completely cordoned off.

“They are not telling us anything at the moment, but one officer did mention that it could have been a ‘domestic that got out of control’.

“I can’t believe that it has happened, I live opposite and am just totally shocked.”

A local newsagent said the couple had reportedly moved in on Saturday, after the house had been let.

The landlord, who lives in Brighton, contacted the paper to confirm that the death had occurred in his property, but he said he had no details of the couple.

He added: “Police have asked me not to say anything, but I am concerned.”

The detached mid-20th century house, which is located at the end of a long drive, about 50 metres from the main street, is currently surrounded by a police cordon.

An elderly lady, who lives in a flat near the back of the property, said:“I didn’t hear a thing.

“I only noticed something was wrong when the police arrived.”
