One of the two police officers stabbed in the early hours of Friday morning in central London may suffer "life-changing" injuries the Metropolitan Police has said.

Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley stated a young female police officer suffered a serious stab wound to her arm which may be life-changing in the Leicester Square attack.

Additionally, a male officer was stabbed three times in the neck and once in the chest, but should make a full recovery.

The stabbing occurred in the Leicester Square area of central London around 6am and both officers are being treated in hospital.

The Met confirmed a man has been arrested and is also currently in hospital.

 

Scotland Yard had earlier said two male officers were attacked by a man with a knife at around 6am.

“Taser was deployed and a male was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker. He was taken to a hospital for treatment where he remains at this time,” the force said.

“Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan condemned the attack and called for anyone with information about the incident to contact the police.

He said: “This attack on serving police officers in Soho overnight is utterly appalling.

“These brave officers were doing their duty and assisting the public at this momentous time for our country.

“My thoughts and prayers are with them, their loved ones and police colleagues following this disgraceful attack.

“Our police officers run towards danger to protect others and keep us safe and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude."
