Leicester City deserve all of the plaudits coming their way as they stand on the brink of the Premier League title this season.
Considering they looked doomed to relegation towards the end of last season it makes you wonder how Martin Tyler will match his iconic commentary when Sergio Aguero won Manchester City the title with his stoppage time winner against QPR in 2012.
“I swear, you’ll never see anything like this ever again,” were the inspired words Tyler used after that magic moment.
When, as seems certain, Leicester are crowned champions, he will have seen something similar at very close quarters – albeit away from his role as the voice of the Premier League.
Tyler’s rather more hands-on role in the game over the past decade or so has been as coach wherever Alan Dowson has managed, two years with Walton & Hersham and seven with Kingstonian.
When Dowson took over as Hampton & Richmond manager last season the only thing on the agenda – much as it was at the King Power stadium – was staying up.
He came into a side with eight points from 10 games in the Ryman Premier League, but a sequence of results every bit as impressive as Leicester managed under Nigel Pearson towards the end of last season saw relegation avoided by some distance.
Momentum had been generated but, unlike at Leicester, Dowson was bullish about Hampton’s chances this season, predicted a top-four finish.
That target was exceeded in glorious fashion at Hampton secured the title and the one automatic place with Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Enfield with the loyal Tyler there to play a full part in the Beveree celebrations.
There must be a little envy at Kingstonian where Dowson had so many near-misses, particularly as their own horrible end-of-season run has given them that feeling again.
But no-one should begrudge one of football’s good guys after producing a non-League version of Leicester’s miracle
