A rugby club in Esher is gearing up for a new season, with its first fixtures scheduled to take place this weekend on Saturday, September 1.
Esher RFC launched its fixtures with a pre-season friendly on Saturday, August 18, featuring the Probables vs the Possibles, which also featured a meet the players Q&A session with Jeff Smith.
This was followed by a friendly fixture between Esher and Bedwas, which saw a narrow defeat of 26-24.
Formed in 1923, the Esher rugby team are currently in the National 1 League Table and will be playing their first game at home on Saturday against Blackheath, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.
The club also supports Esher Lionesses, which was formed in January 2018 and who are an ambitious all-inclusive 18 and over ladies’ group, welcoming anyone who wants to play for fun as well as competitively.
In April 2018, the club became endorsers for England Rugby’s #innerwarrior campaign, aiming to encourage more women and girls to play rugby.
The club also hosts rugby sevens games, as Esher Lions, typically holding games between May and July and holding midweek training sessions before tournaments.
Walking Rugby is another new take on the sport supported by the club, as it has become a popular exercise and community activity, currently with an average age of 50+ playing at the club.
Touch Rugby games are also held on Saturday mornings at 10am, with social games taking place to help improve fitness but most importantly provide a fun session for everyone involved.
